During your breast reduction recovery, your breasts will be wrapped in surgical dressings and a support bra/garment or elastic bandage have to be worn around the clock for the first couple of weeks. This will minimize swelling and support the breasts as they heal. It's important that the surgical incisions are not subjected to excessive force, swelling, abrasion, or motion during the time of healing.

Following your surgery, you may experience stiff chest, soreness and swelling for a few days to weeks. You should avoid pulling, pushing, lifting or physical activities that may cause pain, discomfort, or strain your upper part of the body. You may resume exercise and normal activity as directed by your plastic surgeon. You may return to work within few days to weeks depending on the nature of your job. Be extremely gentle with your breasts for a month at least.

At the time of discharge you will be given specific instructions. Following your surgeon's instructions is key to the success of your surgery. Be sure to follow all of them carefully. The instructions include:

    • How to care for the surgical/treated areas and small temporary drains.
    • To aid healing and reduce the potential for infection you will be given medications to apply or take orally.
    • Specific instructions to look for at the surgical site or in your general health
    • Your surgeon will brief you about the normal symptoms you will experience any signs of complications.
    • Your next follow up date with your Plastic surgeon for suture removal or dressing.

During your recovery phase at home, if you experience bleeding, severe pain or unusual symptoms, you should seek your doctor's attention immediately and may require additional treatment and hospitalization.
