  • What is Hair Transplantation surgery?

    Hair Transplant Surgeons Bangalore

Hair transplantation surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that involves removing a small strip of hair bearing scalp from the back of your own head and then using it to fill an area with thin or no hair (balding) area. Hair transplantation can be done between same genetic makeup identical twins. This surgery can also be done to restore eyelashes, eyebrows, beard hair, chest hair and pubic hair.

Hair is particularly harvested from the back and sides of their own head because this hair is genetically stable, resistant to baldness and continues to grow even in the worse case of male pattern baldness. Some men suffer from diffuse form of hair loss, the pattern of hair loss seen in women, here the loss is distributed throughout the entire scalp leaving the back and sides very sparse. This hair is genetically unstable, and if this hair is used for transplantation , there would be no guarantee that this hair would continue to grow. As a result women suffering from hair loss would not make an ideal candidates for hair transplantation surgery unless they are suffering from male pattern baldness.

Hair loss is primarily caused by a combination of factors such as ageing, hereditary, stress, pregnancy, hormonal imbalance and some illness. Women usually experience diffuse thinning all over the scalp rather than losing hair in patches which is more commonly seen in men. Hair loss occurs not only on the head, but can be seen on eyelashes, eyebrows, beard hair, chest hair and pubic hair. Hair transplantation surgery is considered as a reconstructive treatment in case of burns and trauma. It's important for you to understand that the surgery does not create new hair, and you will never have the hair coverage you had prior to your hair loss, but surgery may camouflage the thin areas and give you more fullness.

Surgical hair transplantation techniques include punch grafts, mini-grafts, micro-grafts, slit grafts and strip grafts for a more modest change in hair fullness. Flaps, tissue-expansion and scalp-reduction are procedures are best for patients who desire a more dramatic change. Sometimes, two or more techniques are used to achieve the best results.

  • Hair transplantation recovery and follow up

During your hair transplantation recovery, your scalp will be covered in dressings to allow seepage of blood and tissue fluids. It's important that the wound areas are shielded from sun. Stitches will be removed in a one to two weeks. Following your surgery, you may experience aching, excessive tightness, or throbbing for a few days to weeks and these can be controlled by the medication prescribed by your consultant. You should avoid strenuous activities for at least 2 – 3 weeks because such activities increases blood flow to the scalp and may cause your transplants or incisions to bleed.

Your doctor may advice you to visit him several times during the first month after surgery to make sure that your incisions are healing properly. Your ability to return to work depends on the length, complexity and type of surgery you've had. Your consultant will instruct as to when to start shampooing your hair. Be extremely gentle while washing your hair for a month at least.

Many patients may experience temporary hair fall within six weeks after surgery. You will have to keep in mind that this condition is normal. After this temporary phase of hair fall, it will take another five to six weeks for normal hair growth to resume at its new location. Then on you can expect about half-inch of hair growth per month. If the hair loss continues or you wish to have thicker hair, additional procedure may be needed.

At the time of discharge you will be given specific instructions. Following your surgeon's instructions is key to the success of your surgery. Be sure to follow all of them carefully. The instructions include:

    • How to care for the surgical/treated areas and small temporary drains.
    • To aid healing and reduce the potential for infection you will be given medications to apply or take orally.
    • Specific instructions to look for at the surgical site or in your general health
    • Your surgeon will brief you about the normal symptoms you will experience any signs of complications.
    • Your next follow up date with your Plastic surgeon for suture removal or dressing.

During your recovery phase at home, if you experience bleeding, severe pain or unusual symptoms, you should seek your doctor's attention immediately and may require additional treatment and hospitalization.
